Why is a used coin battery thicker than a new coin battery?

An unused coin battery's surface should be flat. Chemical reactions inside cause some gas to build up as it is used. This could result in a slight increase in size. However, the size change should not be too dramatic. If this is the case, replace the battery right away. A swollen coin battery can cause device malfunction or even short-circuiting.
