Why do batteries leak?
- When batteries from different manufacturers, different types (e.g., zinc-carbon with alkaline or others), different grades, or a combination of old and new are used, there is a considerable chance of overcharging one of the batteries. Because of the difference in capacity, a combination of batteries as described above may cause one of the batteries to over-discharge, with a high chance of leaking of that over-discharged battery.
- Leaving a battery in an appliance: When batteries are left in an appliance that is switched off or left for an extended period of time in an unused appliance, there is a chance that they will run out of power and, if left in the appliance for too long. This may result in overcharge and leakage.
