What might result in Ni-MH rechargeable batteries leaking?
Contrary to alkaline batteries, Ni-MH rechargeable batteries are reputed to barely leak.
However, electrolyte is a component of both alkaline and rechargeable batteries that, if used improperly, may cause leakage.
There is some improper usage that could result in a sudden increase in battery temperature and the production of gas that cannot be absorbed by the battery case:
- Forcibly draining batteries that have already reached an overcharged state.
- Extremely high current discharge can result in leakage and a lot of heat.
- Short circuit discharge, which causes the battery to get very hot and eventually start leaking.
- A safety valve is installed in each battery to discharge the gas, preventing the batteries from exploding. There is a chance that the electrolyte will seep out when this gas is expelled.
